Support and troubleshooting
Protect your data first, then diagnose the problem. Never include secrets or plaintext backups in a support request.
Effective / updated: August 8, 2026Before troubleshooting
- Export a local backup from “Settings → Backup and restore.”
- Record the extension version, Chrome version, exact steps, and reproducible error text.
- Hide email addresses, bookmark URLs, API Keys, Tokens, and recovery passwords in screenshots.
Google sign-in or cloud sync fails
- Confirm that you are using the official SmartAINewTab extension rather than a temporary build with a different ID.
- Open “Account and cloud sync” and sign in again. Sessions expire after seven days by default.
- When a revision conflict appears, prefer “Restore and merge,” review the result, then upload.
- The server cannot reset an incorrect recovery password. Do not overwrite a remote backup that might still be recoverable.
AI requests fail
- Check the Provider, model ID, endpoint, balance, and Key permissions.
- Grant optional site access only to the exact domain used by the current Provider.
- You can disable AI and continue using the home page, local search, drag and drop, and import/export.
Site access and cookies
Provider, cloud, widget, and single-item recheck features request exact domains when needed. Scheduled or complete bookmark health checks require broader site access. Page metadata, favicon, and ordinary checks do not send cookies. An authenticated GET recheck occurs only for restricted entries after the user reviews the URL list and confirms twice, and it never follows a cross-site redirect.
Delete data
Cloud backups and cloud accounts can be deleted from “Account and cloud sync” in the extension. Permanent account deletion requires another Google sign-in within the previous ten minutes. See Account deletion for the exact result. Uninstalling the extension removes local extension data but does not automatically delete an existing cloud account.
Submit a support request
After Chrome Web Store publication, use the public Support link on the store listing. After the open-source repository is published, you may also use a repository Issue. Remove API Keys, session tokens, recovery passwords, complete bookmark exports, and other sensitive data before submitting. Human review is limited to the specific data you explicitly provide and authorize us to inspect.
